Hands Up! was originally installed at the top of the five storey Thomas Street carpark in central Dandenong, as part of their winter arts festival Nocturnal. It was a giant lightbox, lit from within.
The theme of this installation Hands Up! was hands linking humanity past and present. This bringing together of hands represents community. Hands can be used for good or bad. We can use them as helpful tools to build up our communities or as weapons to destroy them. I decided to use the spider web as a metaphor for community. Community can be as structurally strong as a spider’s web or, if abusive, as in the case of family violence, it can be a trap. The hand is depicted with the universal ‘stop’ sign of an upraised palm. This hand is calling on us to stand up and stop family violence. The decision is ours…literally, it’s in our hands.
