Ran (Ashley) Cao is an illustrator and artist. She was born in China and now lives in Melbourne. Ran received her bachelor degree in Arts at Soochow University and continued her postgraduate education at ECNU (Graphic Design), and RMIT (Art in Public Space). Ashley created a series of projects about dreams for her MA Art in Public Space: An Open Window and Dream Deal.
Her project was divided into two parts. The first part of the project, AN OPEN WINDOW featured projections of windows throughout the city. By projecting windows (which were inspired by her dreams) in public spaces she healed the anxiety she has about living in a new culture. This also built a connection to the city of Melbourne.
The second part of the project is DREAM DEALER. For this project, she collected dreams of people from different nations through social media and tried to sell them to others. Ashley used second-hand pillowcases to make a tent which was her store to sell these dreams on the street. Since it was necessary to ask for permission to install a store like this on the street, she decided to make a ‘Walking Tent’ to use in public spaces. This performance combines realistic and ridiculous, funny elements, just like we have in dreams. The project aims to help people pay more attention to their dreams and subconscious world.
